EDUARDO MENCOS ‘I am a gardener and I plant my dreams in the garden; I sow time and harvest life’... Eduardo Mencos has remarkable skills as a filmmaker, sculptor, photographer and garden designer. At times he brings to his work a near mystical appreciation for the special and varied landscapes of Spain. He writes, ‘Sierra de Grazalema… is the rainiest place in the country, but just a few kilometres away at Almería, also in Andalusia, is the driest spot in Europe.’ He adds, ‘There is, at last, a new vitality with contemporary garden design in Spain’ and he will present both historical and contemporary gardens, most of which are drought tolerant by necessity. Settings range from the misty hills of Galicia with their ‘thousand glowing greens’ to the austere, dry Mediterranean south. Jane Edmanson, well-known Australian garden writer and media personality, describes Mencos as ‘loaded with charisma, artistic flair and sex appeal’. His book The Hidden Gardens of Spain provides an evocative outline of the varied gardens of Spain. His wife Annelli will accompany him and assist with his program.
