Australian Landscape Conference 2007 8-9th September 2007 |
||||||||||||||||||
| This is the seventh international landscape and garden design conference to be held in Melbournethe largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. The first, initiated by Mr Tony Mugg in 1989, attracted over 1,000 delegates. The 2005 conference was also a great success with some brilliant speakers and a total of 631 delegates. This year, following extensive research, we are delighted to present a total of eleven papers by overseas speakers and three by Australians. On the basis of these outstanding speakers, we have no doubt that this conference will also prove an exhilarating experience. Given current dry weather patterns and the consequent challenges they present, it was almost inevitable that our conference theme be New Gardens for a Dry Continent. Many of our speakers will address these issues, using professional experience from quite different cultures such as Spain, France and California. We Australians have been slow to appreciate the possibilities for so-called drought-tolerant and Mediterranean-style gardens but we are left with few choicesthe winds of change are well and truly upon us. The conference will once again be held at the Camberwell Centre with its modern facilities, including the latest audio-visual equipment and other aids. Early bird registrations for the conference are strongly encouraged since reserved seating is provided on receipt of application, the price is reduced by 10% and because events such as the Saturday evening Dinner and Friday Gardens Tour are normally booked out. Early bird reserved seats may be booked together on request. Another feature this year will be the Pre-conference Designer Gardens Tour. Designers and speakers are usually present for these inspections, which provides added interest. This year, we will visit some splendid gardens on the Mornington Peninsula, including a visit to the Australian Garden at Cranbourne Botanic Gardens, where staff will provide an introduction. Dame Elisabeths wonderful garden at Cruden Farm is also included. Once again, the Special Speakers Dinner on the Saturday evening will enable speakers to mingle informally with delegates and to reminisce about their involvement with gardens and the gardening world. Speakers are seated with delegates and the evening is designed to make them easily accessible for casual exchanges. This year, the function is at the historic Australia Club, 110 William Street, Melbourne. Pre-dinner drinks will be held in the Ellis Rowan Rooma wonderful opportunity to enjoy the superb collection of Rowans wildflower paintings. As a private club its rules must be strictly observed. Numbers are strictly limited for this non-profit function. The conference is convened by the Australian Landscape Conference which includes Warwick Forge (Conference Director), Sue Forge (Registrations Manager) and John Patrick, a well-known Australian landscape architect, writer and media presenter who will again chair the Conference. The Conference draws on assistance from many quarters but relies heavily upon the enthusiastic and generous support received from our Sponsors, in particular, our Major Sponsor: The Australian Garden, Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne. While the conference is attended by landscape architects, designers and many who are in the horticultural industry, it also attracts people from many other spheres but who all have one thing in commona passion for design and the search for inspiration! |
